7 Signs Your Gutters Need to Be Replaced

January 12, 20265 minBy The B&T Team

Your gutters play a discreet but absolutely essential role: they channel thousands of litres of rainwater away from your foundation, walls and landscaping. When they fail, the consequences can be catastrophic — and often invisible until it's too late. Here are the 7 signs that tell you replacement is necessary.

1. Visible rust or cracks

Rust is the clearest sign of an end-of-life gutter. It means the protective coating or paint has degraded and the aluminum or steel is oxidizing. Even a small crack lets water fall directly against your foundation with every rain.

2. Leaks at joints or connectors

Standard gutters are assembled in sections joined by sealed seams. These seams deteriorate over time, especially under the freeze-thaw cycles typical of Quebec winters. If you see water stains on your exterior walls at gutter level, the joints are likely the culprit.

3. Water overflows during rain

Overflow can have two causes: a clog (leaves, debris) or a poorly pitched gutter that doesn't drain toward the downspout. In both cases, if the problem persists after cleaning, replacement is often the most cost-effective long-term solution.

4. Sagging or detached gutters

Gutters that hang, tilt or pull away from the fascia indicate that the mounting hooks are rusted or that the fascia itself has rotted. In this case, gutter replacement often needs to include fascia replacement as well.

5. Paint damage or stains on siding near gutters

Peeling paint or moisture stains on your siding directly below the gutters signal a chronic leak. Water seeps between the gutter and fascia, gradually degrading the wood and cladding over time.

6. Mold or water in the basement

This is often the most costly sign. When failing gutters allow water to pool against the foundation, moisture eventually seeps into the basement — causing mold, concrete crumbling and efflorescence. Timely gutter replacement can prevent foundation repairs costing $10,000 or more.

7. Your gutters are over 20 years old

Even gutters that look fine may have lost their effectiveness after 20 years. Drainage capacity can gradually decrease without visible signs. If your home was built or your roof replaced over 20 years ago without the gutters being changed, an inspection is in order.
